color me confused
Posted by thejinius under it's hard being a genius, pop culture
I’ve been listening to Color Me Badd on my ipod because I am going through an early nineties boy band phase. I liked Color Me Badd as a child because each member was a celebrity look alike. There was the dude who looked like George Michael, the dude who looked like Richard Marx, the dude who looked like Kenny G, and the black guy.
I Wanna Sex You Up is probably their biggest hit and it is also their most elusive one. I never understood the line “Girl, you make me feel real good/We can do it till we both wake up!” Shouldn’t the line be: “We can do it till we both pass out”?????

maybe it means the sex is so good it’s like a dream…or maybe they’re morons…

That song is on my regular rotation of early 90’s songs on my iPod. Almost as good as Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison,” with more sensual earnestness and less misogyny.
To me, the real mystery of the lyrics (and I didn’t really question this as a child because I just thought it was some kind of sex slang I wasn’t familiar with) was always the chorus itself. What does it mean to sex someone “up” or love them “down,” for that matter? I don’t think they meant “go down on,” though that makes more sense to me.
Remember when they guest starred on 90210? And the gang got a room in the same hotel the band was staying in so they could stalk them? Then Donna saw her mom having an affair?

i got into a weighty discussion at brunch yesterday about the NKOTB (yes, i can and will use the the acronym) reunion. are you as curious as i am?
but in terms of your 90210 memory, no. KELLY’S mom was married to david’s dad.

Actually I think the line reflects the fact that most of the sex the guys from Color Me Badd get is the kind that takes place in a place called “dreamland.”

ah, color me badd. my little brother would sing I Wanna Sex You Up all the time, having little idea what those lyrics meant. but now that you mention it, they don’t really make sense anyway.

While you’re in that ear, do you know who sang a song with these lyrics:
“We played Nintendo
This was her very first date
I didn’t wanna make it seem to fly
We ate cereal
She couldn’t stay out at late
Her mother told her to be home at nine”
