My friends and I gathered at Elan’s apartment on the upper west side for another round of game night. We indulged in glasses of red wine and slices from Patsy’s pizza to assuage us on a cold and blustery evening.

Whenever I gather for activities that involve any sort of competition, I have to try very hard to suppress my inner Monica. I learned my lesson when I played trivial pursuit with a group of people last Thanksgiving and the girl on the other team shushed me and said something along the lines of simmer down, little girl.

I HATE losing. (I think it has something to do with my overall fear of failure but that’s a future topic with my hypothetical therapist.) So I think participating in game night is a small step toward helping me play well with others and develop good sportsmanship. Um, yeah, I’m learning that it’s not good sportsmanship to flip a board game over when you lose. Or do a dance and yell “ha-ha loser” every time you win.

For this week’s game night, we played Celebrity, a game that involves writing down a bunch of celebrity names and putting them in a hat, splitting up into two teams, picking a celebrity name from the hat and giving clues to your team to guess the celebrity.

And we use the term celebrity very loosely.

Some celebrity highlights:

Briston Palin
Alf
Pol Pot (I guess he’s a rock star amongst the khmer rouge)
Michael McDonald
Manual Noriega
CapTan Dan (yeah, our special housemate from Fire Island)
Briston Palin (again)
Alf (again)
CapTan Dan…again (seriously, people???)

So each team was given 1 minute to play. My favorite part was when Balint watched the time for our team (his opposing team, mind you), forgot to keep track, and let us go over a minute, resulting in extra ponts. You snooze, you lose! From then on, he wasn’t allowed to keep track of the time anymore.

Anyway, I encourage more people to get their friends together for games. We spend so much of our grown up time at work or at the bar that we forget how to play.

On a totally random note, I just realized that I went to highschool with one of the Pussycat Dolls. Her name is Jessica and she was in the dance department at my school. I remember her being really sweet. And now she’s all grown up and a pussy cat doll. Go figure!
