nyc boys and rubberbands
Posted by thejinius under it's hard being a genius
I’ve noticed a fashion trend amongst the downtown/Brooklyn boys set: donning rubberbands as bracelets.
I first noticed the bartender sporting them a couple of months ago. And then the bearded guy wore a bunch on his wrist as if they were bangles. And now I just see them everywhere. Who started it? And why do boys think that this acceptable?
The bearded guy was a photographer and he admitted that he saw a photograph of Johnny Depp wearing a bunch of rubberbands and copied him: “Johnny Depp is the coolest guy so if Johnny’s wearing them, every guy wants to wear them.”
Okay, so I understand what motivated the bearded guy to wear them. But I wonder how this propelled other boys to start rifling through their office supplies for fashion accessories. I doubt that this one Johnny Depp photo has spawned a cabal of impersonators a la that Slim Shady video. Do guys just see one cool guy wearing them on the street and think that will look cool on them too?
At least this is a good way of recycling rubberbands. But what will these boys wear next? Paper clip broaches?
